“Owing to the anniversary, this year’s procession was specially marked by the presence of the life size statue of Our Lady, which normally remains in the convent of the Conceptionists. Just before the procession started, the commanding general of the Ecuadorian Army presented a baton to the statue and declared her as General of the army. He placed all the country’s soldiers under the protection of her mantle, after-which, he pinned a general’s insignia onto the frock of the child Jesus.”
Isn’t that incredible? What an amazing expression of devotion!
“The statue was then placed on a decorated jeep and flanked by soldiers in dress uniform. The procession began early, at around 5 in the morning, in front of the Royal Convent of the Immaculate Conception, which is adjacent to the main square. Throngs of faithful crowded the streets, moving through the city reciting the rosary and singing hymns in honor of the Blessed Virgin. It was an incredible public manifestation of piety and a beautiful echo of Christian Civilization.”
