Our Lady of Victory Novena
Note, I had placed this post in queue to appear today; however, the Society of St. Pius X has just called for a Rosary Novena in Defense of the Family for the same time frame, September 29 – October 7. Of course, there is no contradiction, both intentions merge in the one overall intention, that Our Lady of the Rosary, save us, save our families, save our Church! These days, unlike those at the time of Lepanto, we have forces of satan both within and without. May Our Lady of Victory triumph over satan once again, crush his hateful head and restore the Mystical Body of Christ from satan’s harm.
Although much weakened by the constant fighting with protestant armies, the loyal Catholics rallied under Don Juan of Austria, the half-brother of King Philip II of Spain. Catholic forces were greatly outnumbered, but they bravely flew their blue flags honoring their protectoress, the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Realizing his paltry forces were no match for the fierce Muslims, Pope St. Pius V called for fasting and Rosaries, entrusting the Christian warriors to Our Lady of Victory. The holy Pope himself led his people in prayer and penance.
October 7, 1571 was a Sunday morning and although the Catholic forces were at first in great danger, the wind changed in their favor and they routed the Muslims after a 5 hour battle. The Muslim battle flag was a magnificent banner, of green silk with the name of their false god embroidered in gold thread nearly 30,000 times, and they had never lost a battle in which it flew. But now it was in Catholic hands.
St. Pius V, while in a meeting many miles away, turned to a window and began praying his Rosary. When he finished he advised the others, “Let us go and thank the Lord, the Christian fleet has gained the victory.” And so, October 7th became celebrated as the Feast Day of Our Lady of Victory, now called Our Lady of the Rosary. Those two titles of Our Lady complement each other, for by her Rosary she strengthens us and leads us to victory over the forces of evil.
That victory, while it heartened Catholics, struck a good blow against their aggressors. Despite the mis-information (propaganda) in disreputable sites like wikipedia, the Battle of Lepanto was decisive and from that point, the hateful invaders were gradually driven from Europe. And as we know, every single battle lost to the Catholic “infidels” rankles the Muslim mind. As we know, September 11, 2001, was said to be significant to Muslims because of the Battle of Vienna which was another time Catholics bested them, again due to the superiority of the true Faith over the demonic false faith of islam. Seems they just can’t get over it!
Even though, under Pope Paul VI, the Church returned the Muslims battle flag in 1965, the muslim fight to eliminate Christians continues to this day and recently the terrorists of ISIS have proclaimed that their banner will once again fly over the Vatican.
It is an excellent time to renew our prayers to Our Lady of the Rosary, Our Lady of Victory. Why not begin a Novena to Our Lady of Victory this Monday September 29?
In addition to your rosary, here is a lovely Litany to Our Lady of Victory. You may want to make a Novena of this Litany to Our Lady of Victory: The traditional time for it is from September 29-October 7, her Feast Day.
Please continue to pray the rosary, so much depends on it!

When the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to the shepherd children of Fatima, she identified herself as the Lady of the Rosary. As we know, everything she says is significant. In this case, the title she claimed was that of Our Lady, Victorious in Battle by her Rosary. Now it was not always the practice of the Church to meet aggressive persecution of Christians with photo ops, the planting of trees and soccer games. Once upon a time, Our Lady of the Rosary led her children into battle against those fierce enemies of Christians whose hateful “religion” urged them to kill us wherever they found us.The Battle of Lepanto
The Fall of 1571 was such a time. We had a saintly Pope then, truly humble and pious. He reigned over a Church beset by many dangers. Protestants were skirmishing with Catholics in their efforts to dismantle what was once Christendom. And the dreaded Moors were nearly in control of the Mediterranean. Cyprus had fallen to their control the year before. To add insult to injury, the hateful victors had violated their agreement and instead of safeguarding the lives of the defeated Christians, the Muslims tortured many and slaughtered all but those sold into slavery.Although much weakened by the constant fighting with protestant armies, the loyal Catholics rallied under Don Juan of Austria, the half-brother of King Philip II of Spain. Catholic forces were greatly outnumbered, but they bravely flew their blue flags honoring their protectoress, the Blessed Virgin Mary.
