A video advertisement featuring happy children with Down syndrome was just banned in France. It sounds unbelievable, but it's true. Please join us in expressing your indignation at this decision. People with Down syndrome have a right to speak freely in the public sphere, and that right is swept away by the Council's recent decision. It is a beautiful representation of the value of all lives! As I watched it this morning, it brought tears to my eyes. The State Council in France just affirmed a ruling that bans the video on the grounds that it is “inappropriate.” They argue that allowing people with Down syndrome to smile is “likely to disturb the conscience of women who had lawfully made different personal life choices.” Essentially, France is telling people with Down syndrome that they do not have a right to show their happiness in the public sphere. This decision is discriminatory, and it violates the rights of individuals with Down syndrome.
